Chapter 1: Year of the Pig

Nobody liked taking the ferry across the channel, but everyone had to do it if they wanted a livelihood. We could get our mail delivered at home, but my mother said it was unreliable. No mailman wanted to find us, and no employer in the city wanted to know where its workers came from. So instead I crossed the channel on the ferry to see if I’d be crossing the channel every day for the next year–to see if I’d have a livelihood, just like she said.
